What if the place where Hazel Henderson reimagined economics could also be the place where you reimagine yours?

The Hazel Henderson Center invites scholars, writers, artists, researchers, educators, activists, entrepreneurs, and changemakers to spend dedicated time at 10 Carrera Street in historic St. Augustine, Florida — Hazel Henderson’s former home and the birthplace of the Green Economy movement.

This is not a traditional residency housed in a conference center or retreat facility. It is the home where Hazel Henderson lived, wrote, welcomed collaborators from around the world, and developed ideas that helped shape the fields of ecological economics, ethical finance, and systems thinking.

Residents are invited into that same environment — not simply to study Hazel’s work, but to build upon it.

A Vision That Continues

Hazel’s wish for 10 Carrera Street was simple: that it remain a place where students, scholars, researchers, and changemakers could continue exploring and advancing the ideas that defined her life’s work — a space for dialogue, learning, and action, not a museum.

Today, that vision lives on through the Leadership Residency. The residency exists to give thoughtful people the time, space, and community to pursue work that contributes to a more ethical, sustainable, and regenerative future.

Why This Residency

Hazel believed lasting change begins when people have room to think deeply, speak honestly, and work across disciplines.

For decades, her home welcomed economists, entrepreneurs, educators, investors, journalists, environmental leaders, and systems thinkers whose conversations helped shape the Green Economy movement.

The Leadership Residency continues that tradition by creating an environment where meaningful work can flourish — supported by reflection, dialogue, and interdisciplinary exchange.

Residents have access to:

  • A workshop room for seminars and presentations

The House & The Place

The Hazel Henderson Center occupies Hazel Henderson’s former home at 10 Carrera Street, in the heart of historic St. Augustine, Florida.

The residency is intentionally small. With only two private resident rooms located upstairs, the Center offers an intimate setting where participants can focus deeply while becoming part of a shared learning community.

Located within walking distance of historic downtown St. Augustine, the Center offers a setting that encourages both deep work and meaningful connection — to history, to nature, and to a community committed to building a more ethical and regenerative future.

A Community of Learning

A residency at the Hazel Henderson Center is more than dedicated time for an individual project.

Residents become part of a growing community of scholars, practitioners, artists, entrepreneurs, educators, and leaders exploring many of the same questions from different perspectives.

The Center encourages conversations across disciplines, recognizing that today’s environmental, economic, and social challenges rarely exist in isolation. Whether through informal conversations over shared meals, participation in Center programming, or collaborative exchange during a residency, participants contribute to an ongoing culture of learning inspired by Hazel Henderson’s belief that meaningful change begins when diverse voices come together.

What Happens During a Residency

Every residency is different.

Some residents may spend much of their time writing, researching, or creating independently. Others may use their stay to develop new partnerships, explore Hazel

Henderson’s library, refine a project, or engage with Center programming. The residency is intentionally designed to balance uninterrupted time

Who Should Apply

The Hazel Henderson Center welcomes individuals whose work aligns with its mission of advancing an ethical and green economy. This includes:

  • Scholars and researchers

  • Writers, journalists, and artists

  • Social entrepreneurs and nonprofit leaders

  • Educators and public intellectuals

  • Students and emerging leaders

  • Practitioners working across sustainability, ethical finance, systems thinking, public policy, community resilience, and related fields

You do not need to fit neatly into one category. In Hazel’s spirit, we are especially interested in people whose work connects ideas that are too often kept separate.

Project Areas

Residency projects often connect to one or more of the Center’s seven signature initiatives:

  • Technology and production

  • Employment and migration

  • Trade and ethical finance

  • Peacebuilding

  • Environmental sustainability

  • Consumption and culture

  • Social and institutional change

More broadly, the Center welcomes projects advancing environmental sustainability, ethical finance, regenerative economics, social innovation, quality-of-life indicators, education, community resilience, and systems thinking.

  • Flexible one- to four-week residencies (generally September through May)

We’re building a stipend fund so the residency stays open to anyone doing meaningful work, not just those

Reciprocity

The Leadership Residency is built on mutual exchange.

Residents are invited to share something from their work during or following their stay — a workshop, public conversation, webinar, written reflection, or other contribution that extends the residency’s impact beyond the individual project.

This spirit of reciprocity reflects Hazel Henderson’s belief that knowledge grows stronger when it is shared.

How Residents Are Selected

The Hazel Henderson Center seeks residents whose work aligns with its mission and contributes to thoughtful dialogue around sustainability, ethical finance, systems thinking, social innovation, and related fields.

Applications are considered based on the quality and potential impact of the proposed project, its connection to the Center’s mission, and the applicant’s interest in contributing to the shared learning community that defines the residency experience.

What Residents Leave With

Every residency is different, but each is designed to provide something lasting.

Residents leave with dedicated time invested in meaningful work, new perspectives gained through interdisciplinary dialogue, and a deeper connection to Hazel Henderson’s ideas and legacy.

Many will also leave with tangible outcomes — a completed manuscript, research paper, creative work, educational resource, organizational strategy, or the beginnings of a new collaboration.
