The Hazel Henderson Library
Hello, and welcome to the Hazel Henderson Library at The Hazel Henderson Center and the home of Ethical Markets Media.. Focused primarily on modern economics, environmentalism, world history and futurist studies, the Hazel Henderson Library consists of roughly 5,600 cataloged materials, as well as over 1,000 issues of journals and quarterlies, many of which have been out of print since the 1960s, 70s and 80s. This collection functions as an archive of Hazel’s thoughts, ideas and recommendations; thousands of these materials have been extensively annotated by her as she studied their content, her notes preserved for decades between the pages. We believe this library collection documents one of the most significant birthplaces of the green economy.
Organization
The Hazel Henderson Library is organized into four main rooms: the Main Library, the Sun Room, the Alan Kay Wing and the E.F. Schumacher Collection.
Organized by the Library of Congress classification system, the Main Library, as well as its annexes in the Sun Room and the Alan Kay Wing, contain over 4,300 cataloged materials spanning over a century of published texts. The majority of these materials, as well as many of Hazel’s out-of-print journals and quarterlies, are housed in the Main Library.
Materials are organized into an umbrella category which is then subdivided into more nuanced topics; for example, the H category spans Sociology as a broad topic, and is then broken down into smaller sections like HA: Statistics and HS: Societies. Sociology is the largest section in the main library, followed by Philosophy, Psychology & Religion; Science; Technology; and Geography, Anthropology & Recreation. Housed in the Sun Room include topics centered on the arts, medicine and agriculture.
Alan Kay, Hazel’s husband, economist and dedicated social entrepreneur, was also a prolific and lifelong learner with a large collection of texts that have been catalogued within the Hazel Henderson Library. The Alan Kay Wing includes about 500 materials that belonged to him, many complete with notes and annotations; these topics include Global and American History; Law; and Military and Political Science.
The E.F. Schumacher Collection is housed in the Center’s dining room and consists of texts that have not been cataloged by the organizational system used throughout the rest of the library. There are over 1,200 texts in this room, many that have been independently published by academics, artists and spiritualists the world over. Major categories in the E.F. Schumacher Collection include globalism, sustainable development, energy and environmentalism. This collection is named after E.F. Schumacher, famed British economist and peer of Hazel Henderson, and is a hallmark of our relationship to the Schumacher Center for New Economics.
Please note that not all of Hazel’s materials have yet been catalogued. Some of these items are in her home library, but many of them are housed in her archives at the National Women in Media Collection at the State Historical Society of Missouri.
